As we prepare for the fall dance season, we want to remind all of our team students about the inevitable adjustments and changes that occur from time to time on company teams. It is part of the normal ebb and flow as dancers grow and change. There are many variables that we take into account when we are deciding how to configure the teams for the upcoming season. Every decision made is with the best interests of each dancer in mind. One of the factors that comes into play is the number of seniors who have graduated the previous spring, leaving holes in our older level teams. We have to do a fair amount of reconfiguring based on the number of dancers who are left on each team. We also consider individual differences, such as the different rates that dancers grow, develop and mature. We are also cognizant of the fact that some dancers have more inborn abilities, and some show rapid improvement through hard work, determination and a strong commitment to self-improvement. The dancers who put in extra time and effort, who attend outside dance-related programs, take private lessons, take extra ballet and technique classes, etc. are typically the ones who advance more quickly. There are also some HSPA dancers who split their time between dance and other sports or activities, and some who place all of their attention on dance. All of these factors come into play when we make decisions about team composition each year.

Change can be difficult for everyone. It can be especially hard when teams who have been together for a number of years are split apart. The most difficult adjustment is usually when some dancers are moved up a level and others are left on the same team to become the new team leaders. Not every dancer sees the value in being a role model and a team leader, but it is a very important part of the cycle. It is not so different in some ways from sports teams. However, unlike a JV or Varsity sports team where many players either don’t make the team or “sit the bench” all season, every HSPA team member gets to dance, and has the same opportunities as everyone else to grow and improve. It is true that we do sometimes highlight students in various numbers, but for the most part, it is an even playing field. In general, what you put in is what you get out – and that is largely true of most things in life.

We want you to know that each student is fairly re-evaluated during classes throughout the spring, including recital, where we have a dozen professional colleagues who assist us in evaluating each team while they are on stage. Students are also evaluated during summer classes, camps and at Generation IV Dance. All of these observations are considered when making decisions regarding the teams.

We also look to move kids around within their age groups to provide new chemistry, to "jump-start," to motivate and to inspire those around them. We have been pleasantly surprised many times by “mixing it up.” Being parents ourselves, we do understand the toll it takes on our kids when they are separated from their friends. We ask that you please try to support our professional decisions, and help to support your child during times of change such as this. Remind them that change can bring growth, new experiences, and new friends!

Please find the 2017-2018 Team Lists attached.

This will give everyone time to adjust to the news and be “on board” with any new assignment that affects him or her and/or his or her team. Team assignments may be subject to change upon further evaluation during the first weeks of dance. If changes are to be made after the start of the fall season, we will notify dancers in October of any new assignments.

*CLI exciting news!! We have seen an immense improvement in those Team students that have been participating in our CLI online program these past two years and have found a way to make it affordable and convenient for ALL of our team students to benefit from this educational program. Each team will have the opportunity for a minimum of 1 CLI class per month (conveniently scheduled during their class time) with a $10.00 fee added onto each team student’s monthly tuition. LA renowned professionals teach these classes, which would typically cost a minimum of $20- $25 per class. For those who would like to benefit from the program even more, we will continue to offer the CLI weekly classes, with the older dancers once again on Wednesdays 6:00-7:00, and younger dancers on Fridays 5:45-6:45 with a total of $25 added to the monthly tuition. Yes, for the older students this is actually discounted this year. Taking these classes are equivalent to attending weekend dance conventions but without the cost of travel, hotel, & food expenses, not to mention time away from families. These will be the classes that will include the exciting LIVE interactive with the teacher/choreographer being able to see our students giving them feedback and corrections, which has been such an incredible experience and opportunity for our dancers. To have some of the most revered LA choreographers, many of which are from the GEN IV faculty whom our students have grown to know and love, working privately one on one with our dancers in the convenience of our own studio every month is an opportunity most dancers do not ever receive. When your child registers for the full $25 per month program, NOT ONLY will they be getting the weekly class, (with one being a live interactive class each month), but they will also have their own individual passcode to the CLI website where they can access classes on their personal computers/phones to take a class with some of their favorite choreographers, whether it be a contemporary, hip-hop, tap, ballet, or jazz class~ anytime, anywhere! PLUS another BONUS is that your student will be able to take the other weekly class forFREE! Teen/Seniors can take the Friday class for FREE and the Juniors can take the Wednesday class for FREE! Each class tends to be geared to the more advanced level in each age division, so the teen/seniors could still be challenged in the Friday class and what an opportunity for the juniors to dance with the older kids on Wednesday!

Even more CLI exciting news this year is that ELLEN........Yes THEE Ellen DeGeneres, lover of dance & a huge fan of Shaping Sound will be joining forces with Teddy to help build CLI, bringing much more amazing learning opportunities to all its members. It makes a perfect birthday/holiday gift from a grandparent or relative whether contributing a couple months’ worth or paying for the full year membership. So, whether you opt for the Level 1 program which will be part of the team required curriculum for a total of $100 for the year ($10 per month) or decide to take advantage of the Level 2 program for a total of $250 a year ($25 per month), we promise it will be well worth the money spent.

Thank you for your patronage! We love working with all of our dancers.

See you soon,

Alison, Lisa, Lisa and the HSPA faculity
